Flinders Diary Entry
Below is an exert from Matthew Flinders diary, dated 24 December 1801.
At the time, Flinders' ship - the Investigator, was moored in King George Sound in Western Australia.
After you have read the text, work with a partner or within your reading group to answer the following questions.
1. Find King George Sound on a map of Western Australia. Which major Western Australian town can be found around King George Sound?
2. What sort of type of historical source do you think this text is - primary or secondary? What reasons can you provide to support your opinion?
3. In the text, why do you think that the "group of women and children" might be seen "fleeing inland"?
4. What does the phrase "wins their confidence" mean?
5. Why do you think that the explorers aren't allowed to leave with the 'warriors'?
6. Why do you think that the "women and children stay hidden in the bushes"?
7. Who are the 'Indians' - why do you think that Flinders uses this word? Have you heard this term before? If so, when and are where?
